Corporatism in Africa is an ambitious attempt by editors Julius E. Nyang'oro and Timothy M. Shaw to extend and refine the controversial concept of corporatism. It is also the first collection to apply the concept to Africa, doing this in two theoretical chapters and seven country case studies. The editors' introduction asserts that the concept is a "promising response to the deficiencies of orthodox analysis and praxis, whether modernization or materialism". Despite this optimism the contributors, including Nyang'oro and Shaw, indicate awareness of the limitations of the concept and its tenuous applicability to African politics. As Shaw and Nyang'oro point out, the "collection of case studies is intended to further examine the heurism as well as the handicaps of this mode of analysis and praxis". The most skeptical contributor is Eboe Hutchful, who points out the diversity of usages and shifts in meaning and associations of the concept, which, especially when applied to Africa, stand the risk of further extending its already nebulous boundaries. Hutchful argues that the predominantly agrarian nature of the African economy and its multiple forms of production structures and labor processes are a constraint on corporatism.
