Chris Evans has proved himself to be one of the best fantasy writers of our time. Of Bone and Thunder does not follow the cookie cutter rules that so many fantasy books follow. Gone are knights in shining armor and heroes of the kingdom. In fact the true heroes of this story will never have songs sung about them and will never be praised throughout the kingdom.

Of Bone and Thunder is a lifelike story about the men and women on the frontlines of war. This story could have been told as science fiction or even during our own Vietnam War. The characters we encounter come to life on the pages. Their personalities, their faults, their courage are all reviled to us throughout the story in a very real and relatable way. I couldn’t help but thinking these could be people I know. And as story of life and death surround the now familiar characters I found myself emotionally in the middle of their struggle.

Mr. Evans has also created an amazing fantasy world. The Kingdom is a world full of dragons, dwarves, and magic. Luitox or The Lux is a jungle territory full Fay like people that are called Slyts by the Kingdom armies that the saga takes place in. It is a fantasy version of the fields of Vietnam but still feels as foreign and fantastic and any fantasy realm. I hope to see more of The Kingdom and The Lux in further books.

I cannot recommend this book enough to both readers of fantasy and of war epics.
