Pome mystique de 700 versets, insr dans la grande pope anonyme du Mahabharata, La Bhagavad-Gt, "le chant du Seigneur", est considre comme la "Bible de l'Inde". Le dieu Krishna, avatar de Vishnu (voir Mythes et dieux de l'Inde), prenant la forme d'un conducteur de char, expose ici, au jeune guerrier Arjuna, une doctrine portant sur l'action, la discrimination, la connaissance et la dvotion.
La prsente traduction est de Camille Rao et, Jean Herbert, indianiste bien connu, qui est aussi le prfacier. Le volume comprend un glossaire, un index et des "dfinitions psychologiques" importantes. Parmi les innombrables commentaires crits sur ce texte, celui de Shri Aurobindo (1872-1950) offre l'intrt du regard d'un homme qui se retira de la vie publique aprs une carrire politique ardente pour rechercher une religion synthtique universelle. Fondateur, en 1926, d'un ashram dont il fut le gourou trs influent jusqu' sa mort, il a su adapter la pense indienne  la vie moderne.
