This redbook focuses on the latest enhancements introduced in AIX 5L Version 5.1. It is intended to help system administrators, developers, and users understand these enhancements and evaluate potential benefits in their own environments.

AIX 5L is available for POWER and Itanium-based systems. AIX 5L was made generally available May 4, 2001. AIX 5L for Itanium-based systems is available as a PRPQ. Both platforms were developed from the same common code base.

AIX 5L introduces many new features, including Linux affinity, 32- and 64-bit kernel and application support, virtual IP, quality of service enhancements, enhanced error logging, dynamic paging space reduction, hot-spare disk management, advanced Workload Manager, JFS2, and others. The availability of an improved Web-based System Manager continues AIX's move towards a standard, unified interface for system tools. This publication is a companion publication to the previously published AIX Version 4.3 Differences Guide, SG24-2014, Third Edition, which focused on the enhancements introduced in AIX Version 4.3.3.
