Description of
The Nightcrawlers (Book 1 in the trilogy of Davey Charon stories) (The Davey Charon Stories)
Davey Charon is barely hanging in there. His family members have all either died or deserted him, and he has been reduced to reheating donated leftovers on a hot plate in a dingy itinerant's room. When a Russian mafia deposition witness goes missing at the hospital where Davey works, life finally starts to get less dreary for the twenty-two-year-old high school dropout - and very dangerous. In this gripping crime thriller two stories converge leading to deadly results. The first takes place over the course of single night-shift at the Deaconess Hospital in Boston where Davey is part of a demoralized crew of underpaid security guards working under the incompetent Lieutenant Bertram. As it becomes apparent that things are amiss at the hospital, Davey, thanks in no small part to his own reckless curiosity, falls into a threatening situation which nearly costs him his life. The other half of the story concerns the saga of Borz "the Tongue" Bashiev, a poor Chechen farmer who, through a series of attention grabbing displays of cunning and brutality, rises to the top of the Russian mafia in Boston. Along the way Borz made an enemy: a seemingly harmless drug addict who happens to possess incriminating evidence against Borz. The evidence is small enough to fit in the palm of one's hand, but the mere threat of its exposure sets into motion the mayhem and murder overwhelming the Deaconess. Fast-paced, dark but often humorous, The Nightcrawlers follows Davey's quickly accelerating tangle with an odd assortment of characters and forces including a four-hundred pound Samoan hitman, an infamous pair of lime-green alligator shoes, rumored cannibalism, electroshock therapy, and mysteriously accumulating corpses. The Nightcrawlers is the first book in a trilogy of Davey Charon stories. Book two is scheduled to be released in 2013.
