Description of
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: The Junior Novel (Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy)
An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy tells the story of a group of cosmic misfits Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot who band together to protect a mysterious orb against Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. I stopped reading comic books in the 1970s, which has not served me well in recent movie releases. I had no idea who Gwen was in the Amazing Spiderman series, Bane through me for a loop in The Dark Knight, and I had never even heard of this series, Guardians of the Galaxy. So, in reading this book, I had absolutely no back story. I don't think that should affect a story, but I certainly want to give the caveat that I probably would have had a different experience if I knew the series. This is a pretty simple story. This cosmic band of misfits - Peter (an outlaw Earthling), Gamora (a warrior princess who is trying to escape her poisonous family), Rocket (a brilliant, bounty-hunting raccoon), Groot (a tree-like being who only says one thing), and Drax the Destroyer initially work together for their own profit. However, they realize the power they are trying to sell and realize they need to protect this mysterious Orb from Ronan, Gamora's father, to protect the universe. However, this is very, very simply told. For readers who are familiar with the series and who are struggling readers, this book is probably perfect. This will also likely work for reluctant readers who might have some interest from the movie coming out this fall. However, this book does not have any strong story fundamentals plot, character development, story arc. If you have an on-level reader beyond third grade, this is not the book to push them.
