Considre comme un des principaux facteurs drosion de la biodiversit, lartificialisation des sols dsigne la diminution globale de la part des sols affects aux activits agricoles et forestires ou aux espaces naturels. Cet ouvrage permet didentifier les dterminants conomiques et sociaux de lartificialisation des sols, ses impacts sur lenvironnement et sur lagriculture. Il propose des leviers daction susceptibles den limiter le dveloppement et les effets ngatifs. L'artificialisation des sols est une notion rcente, rpondant initialement la proccupation de quantifier les pertes de surfaces disponibles pour l'usage agricole par changements d'occupation des sols. Elle dsigne aujourd'hui la diminution globale de la part des sols affects aux activits agricoles et forestires ou aux espaces naturels, dpassant ainsi la stricte dimension agricole. L'artificialisation des sols et les sols dj "artificialiss" sont devenus, notamment en France, un enjeu majeur de dbat public et de proccupations politiques. L'artificialisation du territoire est ainsi considre comme un des principaux facteurs d'rosion de la biodiversit, ce qui explique que, depuis 2015, le taux d'artificialisation des sols figure parmi les 10 "Indicateurs de richesse" labors par le Gouvernement pour le suivi de ses politiques publiques. Dans ce contexte, le Ministre de la transition cologique et solidaire, l'Ademe et le Ministre de l'agriculture et de l'alimentation ont souhait disposer d'un tat des connaissances scientifiques permettant de mieux cerner les dterminants conomiques et sociaux de l'artificialisation des sols, ses impacts sur l'environnement et sur l'agriculture, et les leviers d'action susceptibles d'en limiter le dveloppement et les effets ngatifs. Ils ont confi l'Ifsttar et l'Inra le soin de raliser cette expertise scientifique collective, dont cet ouvrage prsente les principales conclusions.
