Retirement Planning: Keys To A Successful Retirement, Staying Happy, Active And Productive In Your Retired Years
Your option to retire might be in the immediate future or it could be years away, but it’s safe to assume that if you’re reading this book then you’re thinking about retirement. Regardless of your age or your circumstances, it’s smart to plan ahead as much as you can. Knowledge is power, as they say, and the more you learn about getting ready for the changes you will encounter and how to plan for retirement, the better prepared you’ll be to make a smooth transition when the time arrives. A growing trend in our society is discovering ways to retire at a young age. This requires discipline and forethought but it is possible! However, the majority of people considering retiring will most likely be 50 or older, as they require more time to meet the financial demands of leaving a job and the income it provides. Beyond the monetary aspect of being able to afford to retire, there are some situations in which a person might want to retire earlier than they normally would. If a person has some physical or mental health issues or if a family member is in some sort of crisis they would want as much time as possible to take care of those important, time sensitive needs. If someone in an unfortunate situation is faced with the choice of staying on a job longer to get a better pension or spending limited time with their loved ones, I think most people wouldn’t be worrying about the money. As Paul Tsongas edifies in his book, Heading Home, “No one on his deathbed ever said, ‘I wish I had spent more time on my business.’” Everyone’s situation is unique and you might want to ask yourself some questions about why you want to retire, to help you determine the best course of action. • Is it simply what’s expected of me due to my age? • Will I be content when I’m no longer part of a work/social environment? • Is my job taking a toll on my physical and/or mental health? • Do I want to start a second career after I retire from my current job? • Am I looking forward to (or dreading) the free time I will have when I retire? • What are my expectations/dreams and are they realistic? I suspect the majority of people who are thinking about retirement are ready to do it whenever they’re financially able, but there will be emotional adjustments to be made too and you’ll want to prepare for those as well. It will provide some great insights into the expectations of retirement and ideas to make this new chapter of your life the best it can be. Even when you are confident that you’re ready, willing and able to retire, your hands might be bound by exactly when you can achieve that goal. Your specific retirement requirements could be governed by your age, the number of years you’ve worked for your employer and a variety of other factors.
