Description of
Making Rights Real: The Story of Women, Law and Development
Making Rights Real is the story of women across the globe working to make the law relevant and real in their lives. Rooted in a dialog that began with the Third World Forum on Women, Law and Development in Nairobi, Kenya in 1985, women from Asia and the Pacific, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean marshaled energy and resources to the goal of empowering women and strengthening the international movement for womens rights. This book tells of the origin and evolution of several autonomous organizations that began with and took inspiration from the 1985 WLD forum. These are: The Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (APWLD), Comit de Amrica Latina y el Caribe para la Defensa de los Derechos de las Mujeres (CLADEM), Women in law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF) and Women, Law and Development International (WLDI). Over the past 35 years, WLD has been a presence within the global womens rights movement through organization development, participatory research, agenda setting, training and education. Conceived as a dialog between law and the social sciences and between activists and academics, WLD facilitated the emergence of regional women's rights organizations in Asia and the Pacific, in Africa, in Latin America and the Caribbean. This book describes the early international, interdisciplinary research and educational work carried out by and in support of this movement aimed at equipping women throughout the world with skills necessary to become effective advocates for women's rights.
