Ma limpegno di esattezza, la documentazione, limpersonalit nascono da una posizione esistenziale di rifiuto pessimistico della realt. E questi canoni della sua arte sono osservati e sofferti, sono martirio e compenso del suo desiderio di perfezione, di assoluto. Avrebbe voluto scrivere un libro su nulla, perch limportante non la materia, ma lopera da realizzare nella scrittura. La norma per lui un antidoto contro la realt ripugnante: vi si costringe dentro, ma anela ad esserne fuori. Ha scritto e riscritto, per cos dire, un unico libro, sul doppio registro ora della scarnificazione della realt contemporanea (Madame Bovary, Leducazione sentimentale), ora di evasione lirica, storica e immaginaria (Salammb), ironica e tormentata (La tentazione di santAntonio), raffinatamente stilistica (Tre racconti). E come testamento ci ha lasciato Bouvard e Pcuchet, una satira feroce della stupidit umana.
