Description of
How Did We Find Out About Vitamins?
After Christopher Columbus sailed to America in 1492, European nations began to send out ships on long voyages across the oceans. The little sailing ships of those days often stayed away from land for many weeks at a time. While they were at sea, sailors ate the food that was stored on board ship. Those were the days before refrigeration, so the ship could only carry food that would not go bad at ordinary temperatures. They ate dry bread and dried or smoked meats. Although the diet was very dull, there was usually enough food, and the sailors didn’t go hungry.
