" A la recherche de la peur ", l'historien Jean Delumeau a russi une peinture sans prcdent de l'Occident du XIVe au XVIIIe sicle, tout la fois histoire des mentalits, histoire de la vie quotidienne. L'auteur dpeint: I. " Les peurs du plus grand nombre " (peur de la mer, peur des tnbres, peur de la peste, etc.) II. " La culture dirigeante et la peur " (l'attente de Dieu, la prsence de Satan et de ses agents _ le juif, la femme _, la sorcellerie). N Nantes en 1923, agrg d'Histoire, Jean Delumeau est depuis 1975 professeur au Collge de France. Il a derrire lui une oeuvre importante, marque par des ouvrages qui lui ont valu une rputation internationale. Sa thse sur Rome au XVIe sicle a t rediffuse dans une collection pour le grand public. La Civilisation de la Renaissance a obtenu le prix Gobert de l'Acadmie franaise en 1968. Les deux livres de la " Nouvelle Clio ", Naissance et affirmation de la Rforme et Le Catholicisme entre Luther et Voltaire, ont ouvert de nouvelles voies l'historiographie religieuse. Enfin, Le Christianisme va-t-il mourir? continue de connatre un grand succs. Jean Delumeau est directeur de la collection " Les Temps et les Hommes " (Hachette) et codirecteur de la " Nouvelle Clio " (P.U.F.). Biographie de l'auteur Jean Delumeau, n Nantes en 1923, est ancien lve de l'cole normale suprieure, agrg d'histoire et docteur s lettres. Aprs avoir t membre de l'Ecole franaise de Rome, il a successivement enseign l'universit de Rennes, Paris I, l'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales et au Collge de France. Il est membre de l'Acadmie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres. Historien, il a spcialement tudi la Renaissance et le vcu religieux en Occident durant la priode dite moderne (XVe-XVIIIe sicles). Il est Commandeur de la Lgion d'Honneur, du Mrite, des Palmes Acadmiques et des Arts et des Lettres. Il est l'auteur de nombreux ouvrages toujours rdits, parmi lesquels Naissance et affirmation de la Rforme (PUF), Le Catholicisme entre Luther et Voltaire (PUF), La Civilisation de la Renaissance (Flammarion), et La Peur en Occident (Fayard), ou encore Le Pch et la peur (Fayard), Rassurer et protger (Fayard), L'Aveu et le pardon (Fayard), Le Jardin des dlices (Fayard), Mille ans de bonheur (Fayard), et Que reste-t-il du Paradis ? (Fayard). Il est aussi intervenu dans l'actualit avec Le christianisme va-t-il mourir ? (Hachette, 1977), Ce que je crois (Grasset, 1985) et Guetter l'aurore. Un christianisme pour demain (Grasset et Hachette, 2003). Ses 46 missions sur la 5, Les Religions et les hommes, ont t publies en livre par D.D.B. et Hachette.
