Gearing Up for Competitiveness: The Role of Planning, Governance, and Finance in Small and Medium-sized Cities in South Asia
While there has been a considerable focus on Asias megacities, little research has been undertaken on the competiveness of smaller and medium-sized cities, where much of the growth is taking place. These cities often support the larger ones with their industrial zones, logistics infrastructure, and aff ordable housing. India has over 50 cities with a population of 1 million or more that do not quality as megacities. This publication asserts that in order for smaller and medium-sized cities to sustain growth and develop, there needs to be greater emphasis on the quality of planning and institutions, as well as financing for infrastructure.
