MOVEMENT: Expressionism INTERESTING FACTS: In 1900, Franz Marc began studying painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany. From 1903-07, he traveled to Paris, France to develop his skills by copying paintings at the city's museums. In 1911, Marc, along with fellow artists Wassily Kandinsky and August Macke founded the Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group. From 1911-12, he exhibited several of his works at the first Der Blaue Reiter exhibition at the Thannhauser Galleries in Munich. The exhibit also traveled to Cologne, Hagen, Frankfurt and Berlin. From 1911-13, Marc painted his largest body of work completing over 200 paintings. In 1912, Marc's work was greatly influenced by French Cubist painter Robert Delaunay. His work became increasingly abstract and stark in nature. In 1913, Marc painted one of his best known works 'Fate of the Animals.' The painting was a premonition of the impending horrors of World War I. In 1914, Marc joined the German army. In March of 1916, he was killed in combat near Verdun, France.
