Description of  Masculinities: Football, Polo and the Tango in Argentina

Examining same-sex relations (soccer and polo) and cross-sex relations (tango), the native Argentinean, Archetti (anthropology, U. of Oslo), questions the pervasive conclusion that typically male values of courage and virility are at the core of nationalism. While Archetti is interested in examining postmodern characteristics like "hybridization" and "creolization" of the social, showing how these form both gender and national identities, Archetti maintains that his "research is not grounded on a political standpoint that claims to fight against conservative forces in Argentinean society."
