Description of
All About History Book of the Titanic
Perhaps no ship in history has engendered such continued worldwide fascination as the White Star Line’s ill-fated Titanic. Th e largest man-made object ever to have been moved when she was launched at Harland & Wolff’s Belfast shipyard in May 1911, within the next 10 months she had also become the most luxuriously opulent ship ever to grace the waves. Everything about her was stunningly impressive, from her remarkable carved and moulded interiors, to the sheer massiveness of her component parts, to her technical features based on cutting-edge maritime technology. Yet, despite design and workmanship that led to her being branded by some as “unsinkable”, she took more than 1,500 passengers to watery graves after only five days of her maiden voyage, the result of a collision with an iceberg in the North Atlantic.
