Migraine and Headaches Pocket Guide + echart (Full illustrated) Primary Headache Disorders Introduction Headache is a painful and disabling condition characteristic of primary headache disorders. It also occurs secondarily to a considerable number of other conditions. A wide range of headache types have been identified and described in medical literature. Primary headache disorders are described as conditions wherein the headache is the disease itself. Tension-type headache (TTH), migraine, cluster headache and the chronic daily headache syndromes are among the most prevalent primary headaches that cause significant levels of ailment worldwide. The prevalence studies estimate that half to three quarters of adults aged 18 65 years in the world have suffered from a headache in the last year. Interestingly, Headache disorders are among the most prevalent disorders, however they are not well recognized as public health hazard primarily due to the reason that mortality is not significantly associated with them. Widespread efforts are needed to study the public health impact of these pandemic headache disorders. (1) The incidence of an active headache disorder in adult population worldwide is 46% in general, 11% for migraine, 42% for tension-type headache and 3% for chronic daily headache. World Health Organization (WHO) lists migraine alone as the 19th among all causes of years lived with disability (YLDs). Tension Type Headache (TTH) alone affects two-thirds of adult males and over 80% of females in the developed countries. Data from migraine prevalence studies and attack incidence suggests that around 3000 migraine attacks occur every day for each million of the general population. Chronic daily headache is reported occur almost every day for one in 20 adults. High prevalence of headache disorders and the high socioeconomic and personal impacts have been well documented in several epidemiological studies. The headache in itself rarely signals serious underlying illness. The public-health significance of these headache disorders lies in their contribution to personal and societal burden of pain, disability, damaged quality of life and financial cost. (2) In this booklet we describe the current understanding about primary headaches disorders in detail and possible triggers, risk factors and treatments available for the respective disorders.
